Cast a Long Shadow Premiers July 9

The Rev. Charles Campbell as Father Flye

Who wouldn’t appreciate the irony that Father Flye would come alive on the stage through the presence of the Rev. Charles Campbell , the pastor of the First Baptist Church of South Pittsburg.

Rev. Campbell, or “Charlie” as he is known to friends and family, is an educator himself and spent 15 years as a missionary in the Philippines where he founded and directed an agricultural school.  As he says himself about his role as Father

The Latin poet Cicero wrote
“everything has a small beginning,” which describes the beginnings of
Cast a Long Shadow. In the early 1990's, a semi-retired radio journalist came to the mountain to begin research for a book he was writing about a former teacher who had mentored him at  St. Andrew’s and with whom he had a life-time friendship. That teacher was Father James Flye. By chance, that Bill Hampton met another aspiring writer, Ken Williams.

When Ken Williams was first asked to write an original play for SCCS in 2002, he remembered the stories told around the kitchen table and decided to create a fictionalized portrait of the Flyes and a cast of characters

which would aptly reflect their lives while they lived at St. Andrew’s. The result will be unveiled on July 9 at the premier of Williams’ play.

Cast a Long Shadow opens July 9 at St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School (SAS) and runs through August 7. All performances will be held in the school theater. It is especially timely as the play is a “kick-off” event for the upcoming St. Andrew’s year-long centennial anniversary celebration, culminating  with a series of special events to be held by SAS  during Alumni Weekend June 2005.
